Song is a special thing, Every one in the world like different songs. People make songs to show their soul. In Charless Harrison's “Generals died in bed” the protagonist has heard and sung many songs for his friends and comrades . Different countries soldiers create different songs. At beginning ,which show their fear about the battle in the future. This song is also funny for them to feel relax. They make irony song about the bastard, therefor the German soldiers were affected by poison and sing the song crazy. Different songs show different situation of people's life. Like the life of German soldiers . They song that very hopelessness ,they use song to vent about their problems. This symbolizes how soldier disconnect themselves from the problems. This is trouble time,the song show the war is cruel, the killing can't stop. The soldier is very hard,but the generals are comfortable. The War I may not happened If the German didn't invasion France. The song about the war are special than other songs.
At the beginning . The recruits prepare leave Canada and go to war. Before they parade on Materal's road . They live in dormitory. Some of boys begin to sing a war song. They sing with a mock pathos. The song show that they are very fear and worried about the war will get their life. The first sentences of the song is “I don't want to died” Which mean they would died in the war and can't back home forever. This sentence is also make themselves feel funny. The reason is they have not up the line yet. They don't realize the real war. The sentence “the bullets they whistle ,the cannon they roar. The young soldiers also feel they would died to shell and vent in the song. Soldiers are fear, because their face are greenish yellow under they dim lights then they sing this song. In that time every things about war are foreign of them, but they will create songs at rest.
Soldiers have sung a dirty,funny song at Bethune at the rest .Once the soldiers walk in the city . Some soldiers beginning sing a obscene song “ Oh madam ,have you a daughter fine,parley voo Fit for a soldier up the line. Some body ask as a song. “ Oh yes ,I have a daughter fine,fit for soldier.” This song is half-terrified and half-Rabelaisian. Because the song show they want sex with the courtesans in the city. The solders line up out the brothel and wait for courtesan certainty. Which proof what they want they song before. The soldier's enemy -German, also use song to vent their mood. At the front line, Canadian repulse German for many times. Once, the German soldiers get close. Canadian are easy to shot them. The protagonist can hear snatches of song. They were singing that time. They close enough for Canadian to throw grenades. Which mean they court death ,because their ranks waver and run slowly toward Canadian trench. German soldiers are off normal ,because of they were affected by poison. Their brain can't control their behavior. They feel hopeless,so they the sing like scream, many of them died, hurt and one of them lost half of face in the attack before,the wounded soldiers sleep here and nobody help them. Beside, German soldiers become brave when they sing become a shriek. They don't care to died at that time. Because they lost mind and just shouted by Canadian. Which make protagonist feel savage beasts. German's song are trouble,that is the last scream in their life. Although German suffer a defeat for many times, they sing the song can make them brave to counter-attack at last, they use flame -thrower to make Canadian escape. Many of protagonist's friends died for it.
In conclusion, the songs in the war are more special than the songs in real life. They were vented by soldiers. They don't have women. Some of them miss wife. So,they want sex with courtesan at rest. Even they want make a bastard. They use song to think about that. The German soldiers also sing song to show their mind in rankle different. Every sing have soul. They were created by people’s experience. In real life ,we can sing song when we have encounter. If the soldiers don't use song to vent their mood,they won't across rankle life in the war healthy. They would suicide, because of war is cruel,dangerous and unbelievable. People should remember the songs and shouldn't have war between each other.
